Cucurbit flute, Chinese name "Hulusi", is a kind of national musical instruments in Yunnan province, China.Because of its unique beautiful timbre, the classic appearance, mellow and elegant sound, easy to learn, is loved by a number of music lovers.

Cucurbit flute belongs to a kind of pipe musical instrument, it is composed by a gourd and two (or three) of bamboo tubes, upper part of the gourd is blow mouth, the three bamboo tubes connected with gourd is sound tube, among them, the longest and thickest one in the middle is the main sound tube, there is six fingering holes on front side, another hole (the seventh fingering hole) on back side of the main sound tube.There is also a sound hole and two lacing holes on bottom of back side.

Vice sound tube installed with without fingering hole, therefore the vice tube inserted into the left or right side of main tube, in the playing, take out the cork in the bottom of vice tube, the vice tube will make a sound with the main tube together , but vice tube can only make one tune.When playing, if main tube and vice tube opened together, 3 tubes make sound together, but the melody is only from main tube, the vice tube only make the harmony effect with single-tone which will make the sound dim beauty.

Hulusi often used to play folk songs, most suitable for playing music or dance music with smooth melody, generally long- tones is more, combination tone is rich, the music more beautiful and harmony, can better express the thoughts and feelings of the players.

Keys to choose: C OR bB keys, the sound of C will be a little higher than bB tune.Sound of bB is more lower and deeper.People with small hand can choose C key, people with big hand can choose bB key.The two keys all suitable for beginners!
